Wenn man heute von einer Gruppe spricht, die man als Erfinder des „Cosmic-Rock“ bezeichnen könnte, so nimmt sicherlich Pink Floyd die erste Stelle ein. Sie sind als „Urväter“ und richtungsweisend für alle Gruppen zu bezeichnen, die futuristische Klänge und Effekte in ihre Musik übernommen haben. All diese Gruppen haben von Pink Floyd irgendwo gelernt und sei es nur in Hinsicht auf die Arbeit mit Soundeffekten oder der Lightshow.

Pink Floyd entstand 1966 als Gruppe aus den Hochschulabsolventen Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Rick Wright und Syd Barrett, der die ersten Songs der Gruppe komponierte. Barrett entwickelte einen völlig neuen bis dahin unbekannten Sound. Er bediente sich erstmals auch technischer Effekte, die er zum organischen Teil der Musik und der Bühnenshow entwickelte. So zum Beispiel durch extreme Verzerrung der Gitarrensoli, neuartige Klangfärbungen der Orgel durch erweiterte Registrierung und Benutzung von Umweltgeräuschen zur Verfremdung. Hinzu trat als wichtiger, gleichberechtigter Bestandteil eine Lightshow, die den Musikablauf optisch unterstrich.

Die ersten Erfolge der Gruppe waren hart erkämpft, zumal sie sich zunächst nur in kleinen Clubs produzierte, in denen ihre Show kaum zur Geltung kam. Den Durchbruch brachten ihre ersten zwei Singleveröffentlichungen „Arnold Layne“ und vor allem „See Emily Play“, die beide Hitparadenplatzierungen verbuchen konnten. Die Gruppe entfernte sich jedoch sehr rasch von den ausschließlich auf die Hitparaden zugeschnittenen Kompositionen. Sie vervollkommneten ihre Musik und ihre solistischen Fähigkeiten im Laufe der folgenden zwei Jahre ständig.

Syd Barrett verließ die Formation 1968 um eigene Wege zu gehen. Er wurde durch David Gilmour ersetzt. Nach diesem Wechsel baute Pink Floyd die Bühnenshow weiter aus, und auch die Lightshow wurde stark erweitert. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt tourte die Gruppe bereits mit 6½ Tonnen Gerät – einer für die damalige Zeit unvorstellbare Menge – durch die Konzerthallen. Jeder Auftritt der Pink Floyd wurde von ihren Mitgliedern als neues Experiment betrachtet, bei dem sie das Publikum an ihren musikalischen Entwicklungen teilhaben ließen. Damals wie heute ist es dem Zuhörer eines solchen Konzerts möglich, sich durch den psychedelischen und meditativen Charakter der Musik und der Lightshow völlig in den „Musik- und Lichttrip“ der Gruppe zu verlieren. Pink Floyd bietet durch einen einzigartigen Aufwand an technischen Effekten die Illusion einer Reise durch Raum und Zeit, deren Erlebnis immer wieder faszinierend ist. Die Show der Gruppe wird bis heute immer wieder verändert und ausgebaut.

So hat sich Pink Floyd in letzter Zeit immer mehr auf ein oder zwei jährliche Auftritte, und einige wenige Plattenproduktionen beschränkt. Ein Film mit ihnen wurde erst kürzlich fertiggestellt. Er bildet eine weitere Bereicherung im Medienspektrum dieser Gruppe. Jede Platte, jede Show, stellt das Optimum dar, das die Gruppe zum Zeitpunkt der Entstehung der Produktion zu bieten hat. So kann man heute schon sagen, daß man Pink Floyd auch weiterhin, wie zu ihren Anfängen, zu den Pionieren der Popmusik zu rechnen hat.

Pink Floyd are nowadays always referred to as the inventors of 'cosmic rock'. Many of the groups that now use futuristic sounds and effects in their music were influenced by Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd appeared on the scene in 1966, consisting of the graduates Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Rick Wright and Syd Barrett, the latter being responsible for the first, self-composed, titles released by the band. Barrett foundet an entirely new sound that was unknown up till then. He was the one to first use technical effects, and he developed them in such a way so as they became a fully integrated part of the music and stage presentation. One of the most important and dramatic parts of their entire performance is the use of technical effects that emphasize their music so accurately.

The initial successes of the group were hard fought for, mainly because Pink Floyd presented themselves in small clubs that were just not made for their terrific stage-show. They were first publicly recognized due to their single releases "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play" that both hit the UK charts. The group moved away from chart-compositions, however, and in the course of the following two years they gradually perfected their style of music as well as their individual musical identities.

In 1968 Syd Barrett left the formation to realize his own musical ambitions. David Gilmour took his place within the group. After this change of membership Pink Floyd continued to strive yet again for new methods of presentations. At this time Pink Floyd travelled with no less than 6 1/2 tons of equipment through Europe's concert halls. Each one of their public appearances were looked upon as an experiment which was to be participated in by their audiences. It was possible then as it is today for the fans to utterly lose themselves in the group's psychedelic and meditative music, and last but not least, their unique lighttrip. By means of their terrific expenditure in technical effects Pink Floyd can offer the illusion of a trip through time and space, an experience that has never lost any of its fascination.

Lately Pink Floyd have restricted their activities to one or two annual public performances and very few recordings. A film starring Pink Floyd was completed recently and constitutes one more step in the development of their career. Every record, every show, represents the peak of what the group has to offer at that particular time.

It can thus be said that Pink Floyd are considered pioneers of the pop era not only from beginning but also today.
