THE MUSIC MADE BY PINK FLOYD DURING THE PAST FIVE decades has continued to impact upon audiences and fellow musicians in equal measure. It is not bound by genre, nor by the period during which it was made. Neither is the music included on this bespoke MOJO compilation, which has loosely been inspired by the insurrectionary spirit of the band’s 1977 album, Animals. Indeed, the 15 tracks gathered here reflect the emboldened musical times which we are living through and where the progressive spirit of the artists represented here can be openly celebrated. Welcome, then to Pigs Might Fly – a collection of music designed to transport you through this world and beyond, and which proves that ‘prog’ is far more than just a four letter word…

01 The Other Side.
- Public Service.

Few artists have travelled to the outer limits like London outfit Public Service Broadcasting. 2015’s The Race For Space saw them chronicling the intergalactic ambitions of the US and the Soviet Union from 1957 to 1972, sampling dialogue from assorted space sorties. The first mission to the moon provides audio that sets the tone for our sonic exploration. Read more about Public Service Broadcasting’s latest earthbound endeavours on page 18.

02 Lost In Space.
- Hawkwind.

“I am actually a bit disappointed with the fact we haven’t gone quite far enough, but it’s all linked to the arms trade,” says Hawkwind leader Dave Brock, discussing the 21st century retrenchment in space travel. Despite that disappointment, Brock has continued to make music where his fascination with the space age sits alongside more human subjects, the turbo-charged Lost In Science being a more recent rumination. 03 Through Restless Seas I Come.
- Gong.

Following the death of Gong leader Daevid Allen in March 2015, assorted members of the band attempted to keep his spirit alive by working on new music. The results of their endeavours emerged last year on the impressive and universally acclaimed Rejoice! I’m Dead! album. The current incarnation’s continued momentum is evident on this track, where contemplation builds beautifully on what is a fantastically textured and progressive mini-epic.

04 Adoration Song.
- Six Organs Of Admittance.

For the last 20 years Ben Chasny’s exploratory guitar work with Comets Of Fire and Six Organs Of Admittance has thrilled both listeners and fellow musicians. His latest release under the latter name is an album full of understated beauty, its aim described as an attempt to celebrate “love, forgiveness, reality and an ever-wider view, with the understanding of our circular path in life…” Listen to the guitar on Adoration Song and you will sense as much.

05 Jakten Genom Skogen.

- Dubgen.

Lush, inspired and complex, Dungen’s music is also blessed with a lightness of touch. Last year the Swedish outfit were asked to produce a soundtrack to the oldest surviving animated movie, Lotte Reiniger’s 1926’s The Adventures Of Prince Achmed. The result is Haxan, a 14-track instrumental effort where mood and grooves prevail, matching the fantastic tale itself. A key tune on the album, Jakten Genom Skogen – translated as “hunt into the woods” – is full of sweeping mellotrons and fitting jazz-infused rhythms.

06 Modern Kosmology.

- Jane Weaver.

A child of the ’70s, Jane Weaver began her solo career back at the dawn of the millennium, creating an impressive body of work. Having sampled everyone from Hawkwind to Cybotron, her own music was employed by Coldplay when Chris Martin used a snippet of one of her tunes back in 2014. Her new effort, Modern Kosmology (the title track of which is presented here), sees her continue her journey deeper into neo-kosmische territory.

07 Sister Green Eyes .

- Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation.

Releasing their debut album, Horse Dance, in 2015, Stockholm-based outfit Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation established themselves in the vanguard of modern psychedelia. Less than a year later its follow-up, Mirage, is an even richer effort, a point underlined by the expansive grooves of Sister Green Eyes. Their growing reputation was confirmed when they won the prestigious Composer Of The Year at the Manifest Awards, Sweden’s answer to The Grammys.

08 Ashamed To Be A Part Of Them.

- Mick Karn.

Armed with a bold sense of musical adventure, Mick Karn helped characterise Japan’s sound prior to the art-rock outfit’s split in 1982. As a bass player, he worked with the likes of Kate Bush and Joan Armatrading, while his solo albums remained full of enthralling material. In 2009 he released The Concrete Twin, a remarkable, dense effort, this being the opening track. Tragically, it would be his final solo outfit prior to his death from cancer two years later.

09 1969.
- Ulver.

The ’60s have always been significant as far as Krisfoffer Rygg and his Norwegian collective are concerned. The grandiose, brooding 1969 reflects on the fact that “nothing has changed” since the end of that decade. A brand new tune, it evokes the Church Of Satan and the Manson murders, and is taken from the band’s highly-anticipated album, The Assassination Of Julius Caesar, which will be released on April 7 and is mixed by Youth and Michael Rendall.

10 Rise Up.
- Foxygen.

Californian duo Foxygen have always had a keen understanding of musical history. They came close to splitting a couple of years back, but Jonathan Rado and Sam France have returned with Hang, their fourth and most ambitious album to date. Featuring orchestral arrangements, the album harks back to the days when rock music was unafraid of theatricality. Listening to the opening couplets to Rise Up and you’ll be left in no doubt of the band’s progressive intent.

11 Silent Orb.
- The Phoenix Fundation.

Lyrically speaking, Silent Orb evolved from a conversation between PF founder member Samuel Flynn Scott and his son. Dealing with real-life existential angst, its layered vocals and tightly focused progressive pounding are set against a carefully crafted backdrop. The tune’s pop sensibilities are juxtaposed with a near hymnal quality, pointing out the scale and ambition of the New Zealand outfit’s sixth LP, Give Up Your Dreams.

12 Final Eclipse.
- The Comet Is Coming.

The London-based trio of King Shabaka (aka Shabaka Hutchings, sax), Danalogue The Conqueror (aka Dan Leavers, synth) and Betamax Killer (aka Max Hallett, drums) earned a Mercury Music Prize nomination for Channel The Spirits, their 2016 debut. Latterly, their insidious sense of rhythm has been used to flog crisps on a TV ad. Their current single, Final Eclipse, is a further example of their fine blend of Sun Ra vibes and deep electronic grooves.
